OBITUARY: The Rushville Times,
July 6, 1899; NOTE: F. H. D. Kruse died July 4, 1899 at his old home place
east of this city where he has resided for 63 yrs. -- Frans H. D. Kruse
was born in E. Friesland, near Bremen, Germany, Dec. 6, 1821. In 1835 in
company with his father and brother, Sunke M. he came to America and landed
in New York July 4th. From there Mr. Kruse, Sr. with his two sons went
to Albany, NY by way of the Hudson river, thence across to Schenectady
and by the Erie canal to Buffalo; thence by lake to Cleveland and from
there by land and the Ohio river to Cincinnati. He afterwards went to Beardstown
and a few months afterwards purchased a mill on Sugar Creek, 10 miles east
of Rushville. In Apr. 1856 Mr. Kruse and his sons located on the farm which
was afterwards to be known as the Kruse homestead, where F. H. D. Kruse
was to spend his life and end his closing days. This farm, which was then
a tract of the virgin wilderness, has grown in worth with the lapse
of years and today unincumbered, is worth close to $100 per acre. Like
all the other early settlers Mr. Kruse chose a timbered pierce of ground
and after long years of hard labor the farm was cleared with the exception
of a magnificent grove which is the admiration of everyone who travels
the plank road to Pleasantview. Coming to this country at the age of 14
and not able to speak a word of English, Mr. Kruse set diligently to work
to master the rudiments of the language, and at the old Liberty school,
near his farm, he became versed in the common English branches. He was
a great reader and took a live interest in the affairs of the state and
nation, and as late as last Sunday perused his papers with keen pleasure.
Since The Times has been under the present management, a period of 31 yrs.,
Mr. Kruse has been a regular subscriber, besides sending the paper to his
son, Polk in Texas. -- In 1843 Mr. Kruse purchased the home farm from his
father and on Dec. 3rd of that year was united in marriage to Elizabeth
C. Garrett, who survives him at the age of 75 yr. The union of young hearts
which was sealed at the altar in that pioneer day have ever beat in unison
and through years of pleasure, sorrow and pain, they have lived to see
the glory of their lives fulfilled. And now, after a union of 55 years,
the aged consort has been called to his eternal home and the bond of love
and devotion broken. -- To Mr. and Mrs. Kruse were born six children, one
of whom died in infancy. The surviving members of the family are Henry
K. of Woodstock Twp., George W. Kruse of this city; Polk Kruse of Millsop,
Texas; Mrs. M. W. Greer of Rushville Twp. and Mrs. James E. Mathews of
LaBelle, Mo. With the exception of Polk all the children were home at the
time of their father's death. Mr. Kruse also has two surviving half-brothers,
George W. of Macomb and William of New Orleans. -- On Thursday at 2 p.m.
funeral services were held at the family residence conducted by Rev. Alpheus
Brown, who had known Mr. Kruse for 53 years. Forty-seven years ago Mr.
Kruse became a member of the church of Christ and has ever lived a true
and faithful Christian life and his last days of peace with the assurance
of eternal reward.

HISTORY: BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW
OF CASS, SCHUYLER AND BROWN COUNTIES, ILLINOIS; Biographical Review Publishing
Co., Chicago, 1892; NOTE: Frans H. D. Kruse was born in East Friesland,
Germany, in 1821. His father , Dierk Kruse, son of George Kruse, was born
in the same place. The father of the present subject learned the trade
of mill wright and followed it in his native land. He bought several important
millsites erected mill and set them in successful operation and sold them.
In 1835, he came to America, in Virginia, a ship sailing from Bremen, bringing
with him his sons Frans H. D. and Sunke M. and landed in New York, July
4. From there he went to Albany, by way of the Hudson River, thence across
Schenectady, and by Erie Canal to Buffalo. Thence by lake to Cleveland
and from there by land and the Ohio River to Cincinnati. He afterward went
West into Illinois to Beardstown, and a few months afterward bought a mill
on Sugar Creek, ten miles east of Rushville. Six months later he sold the
mill and bought a small farm two and one half miles east of Rushville and
turned his attention to farming. Here he resided for eight years , when
he returned to the old country. Some years afterward he returned to America
and settled in Texas, remaining there five years. He afterward came to
Illinois and bought a farm in McDonough County. This farm was exchanged
for a farm five miles southwest of Rushville in Woodstock township, where
he lived until his death in 1860. --The mother of the subject of this sketch
was Hiske J. Miller. She was a native of the same country as her husband
and spent her entire life there. She had five children, all of whom grew
to manhood. The present subject being the youngest, who was in his fourteenth
year when he came to Illinois with his father. The country was but sparsely
settled at that time and some of the land was still owned by the government.
-- Frans assisted his father at the mill and afterward in cleaning out
the farm. As the land was heavily timbered they were able to build a small
frame house on it. In 1843 he bought the farm of his father and has had
his residence here ever since. Good, substantial buildings have since been
erected upon it, and the farm is in a high state of cultivation. -- He
married, in December, 1843, Elizabeth C. Garrett, who was born in Georgetown,
Scott county, Kentucky, in April of 1824. Her father, Thomas J. Garrett,
was born in Delaware and was the son of David Garrett, who lived for many
years on the line between that State and Pennsylvania and spent his last
days there. The father of Mrs. Kruse went to Kentucky when a young man,
and married in Lexington, Susanna Wigert, who was born in Maryland and
went with her parents to Kentucky, while she was an infant. After her marriage
she removed to Georgetown with her husband, and some years later again
removed with him to Illinois by way of the Cumberland, Ohio and Mississippi
rivers. Mr. Garrett made several removals in Illinois and spent the last
few years of his life near Browning, Schuyler county. The mother of Mrs.
Kruse survived her husband for many years, and died at the residence of
a younger daughter, who was a resident of Nebraska, at the advanced age
of ninety-one years.

OBITUARY: The Rushville Times,
May 29, 1919; NOTE: Mrs. Elizabeth Kruse - The death of Mrs. Elizabeth
Kruse, widow of the late F. H. D. Kruse, on last Saturday, brought to an
end a remarkable life whose youth, fullness and old age was spent on the
farm where she resided for more than seventy-five years. With her passing
there comes a break in the five generations of this family, there surviving
two great-great-grandchildren. -- Mrs. Kruse lived to the ripe old age
of ninety-four years and retained her faculties to a remarkable degree
and her death removes probably the last of the pioneers who settled near
Rushville in the thirties. -- On Monday afternoon funeral services were
held at the old homestead, four miles east of Rushville, conducted by Rev.
W. E. Dudley of Charleston, Ill. Interment in the Rushville cemetery. --
Elizabeth C. Garrett, daughter of Thos. I. and Susan Garrett, was born
at Georgetown, Russell county, Ky., April 16, 1825; departed this life
at the old home, two miles east of Rushville, May 24, 1919, at the ripe
old age of 94 years, 1 month and 8 days. In the year 1836 her father's
family, in company with the family of the late Jonathan Patteson, moved
to Schuyler county, coming down the Columbia and Ohio rivers in a flat
boat and up the Illinois river by steam boat landing at old Erie, between
Beardstown and Frederick. -- With the exception of two years in McDonough
county she has been a continued resident of Schuyler county. She was united
in marriage with the late F. H. D. Kruse Dec. 3, 1843, who preceded her
to the great beyond July 4th, 1899. -- The day following their marriage
they went to housekeeping in a cabin in the woods, at which place she has
lived continuously ever since, a period of a little more than 75 years.
To this union was born seven children, one son dying in infancy; Mary Ellen,
dying after reaching young womanhood and George W. at the age of 65 years.
Four yet remain to mourn the loss of a true and loving mother, viz: Jas.
K. Polk of Millsap, Texas; Henry of Brady, Texas; Susan H., wife of M.
W. Greer, and Dora K., widow of the late Jas. T. Mathews; also fifteen
grandchilden, eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
-- She made a profession of religion in early life and was baptized in
the Illinois river by Barton W. Stone, one of the early pioneer preachers
of the Christian church of Rushville. Later in life, in company with her
husband, she transferred her membership to the Church of Christ, remaining
a faithful member until the Master said, "It is enough, come up higher."
-- Mother Kruse came of a long lived family, her mother and oldest brother
each living to the age of 92 years. She was a woman of remarkable constitution
and endurance and outlived by many years all of the pioneer settlers in
her community and is the last of her father's family of eight children,
all of whom lived to be heads of families.

2 James K. Polk Kruse
OBITUARY: The Rushville Times,
June 24, 1936; NOTE: Polk Kruse, son of the late F. H. D. and Elizabeth
Kruse, who resided three miles east of Rushville until their death some
30 or 40 years ago, died at his home in Millsap, Texas on Friday, 12 June;
aged 91 years. A letter was received from his widow giving the news of
his death and requesting us to discontinue the Times, which had gone to
him regular for about 70 years. She stated that he enjoyed reading
the home paper up to the time of his fatal illness. Mr Kruse left Schuyler
County soon after the Civil War, probably about 1866 and located in Texas.
His father sent the Times to him after he located and continued to do so
as long as he lived and since that time Polk had the paper continued. During
the years he lived in Texas, Mr. Kruse made only one visit back to his
boyhood home - but he kept in touch with three generations of his family
and other names he knew through the Times. After locating in Millsap,
Mr. Kruse was married but his widow confined her letter to a bare announcement
of his death. Older residents of Whiteoak neighborhood and relatives will
recall Mr. Kruse as the last member of his family, even though they never
met him. In years past he often had letters put in the Times and was represented
a few years ago in our First Homecoming Addition.

OBITUARY: The Rushville Times,
November 14, 1928; NOTE: End of Life Came to Mrs. M. W. Greer Tuesday -
Mrs. Susan Greer, wife of M. W. Greer, passed away at her country home
in Whiteoak neighborhood Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock following an illness
that had kept her confined to her bed for the past ten days. -- Since mid-summer
she has been in failing health, not from any organic trouble but due to
a general breaking down of bodily functions, incident to those who have
passed four score years. -- Mrs. Greer was born in Rushville township Jan.
20, 1847, in the near vicinity of where her life was spent, a daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. D. Kruse, pioneer residents of Schuyler county. --
Here in the parental home she was joined in marriage to M. W. Greer and
more than sixty-two years of beautiful life companionship have been theirs,
spent together in the home which the husband established on a near by farm.
-- Here in the closing days of her life she had the cheering companionship
of her husband and son, Owen W., who lived at home, another son, Luther,
who lived near by and an only daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hermetet of Macomb,
all of whom were at her bedside as her life ebbed to its close. -- Another
son, Henry Greer, of San Rafael, Calif., visited his parents during the
summer, making complete the family circle, with an enjoyable season for
the mother now at rest. -- Funeral services will be held at the Christian
church in Rushville Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev.
Fred Wilson; interment in the city cemetery.
OBITUARY: The Rushville Times,
November 21, 1928; NOTE: Funeral Held Thursday for Mrs. M. W. Greer - Funeral
services for Mrs. Susan Greer, wife of M. W. Greer, were held at the Christian
church in Rushville Thursday afternoon of last week at 2 o'clock. Rev.
Fred Wilson, former pastor and old-time friend of the decendent, conducted
the service, assisted by Rev. H. W. Talley. Interment was in Rushville
cemetery. -- The following tribute, written by the husband with whom she
had lived more than sixty-two beautiful years, was read at the service
by Rev. Wilson in connection with a very appropriate poem, "Lovers Still."
-- Susan H., eldest daughter of F. H. D. and Elizabeth Kruse, was born
on the old homestead farm two and one-half miles east of Rushville, Jan.
20, 1847, and passed out of this earthly life at her home in sight of the
place of her birth Nov. 13, 1928; aged 81 years, 8 months and 23 days.
-- She was joined in marriage to Martin W. Greer April 4, 1867. To this
union was born seven children--Fred A., who died at Spokane, Wash., March
2, 1902; Martin Luther, living on a farm adjoining the old homestead; Mildred
M., wife of Dr. J. W. Hermetet of Macomb, Ill.; Henry E., San Rafael, Calif.,
and Owen J., living at home, two sons dying in infancy. There is also left
to mourn her death her aged husband, two brothers, Polk and Henry Kruse,
both living in Texas, and one sister, Dora K. Mathews, living in Rogers,
Arkansas, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. -- In early
life she made a profession of her faith in Christ and united with the Christian
church of Rushville. Later she transferred her membership to the Church
of Christ, living a faithful Christian life until the Master said, "It
is enough, come up higher." She was a great admirer of the beautiful, both
in life and in nature. She loved her flowers, she loved her home and her
family, she loved her neighbors and friends, she loved her church and the
worship and services of the sanctuary. Her life was dedicated to the service
of others and her greatest happiness consisted in making others happy.
The following lines, taken from one of her favorite poems fits her case
to perfection:
I live for those who love
me
For those who know me true,
For the heaven that shines
above me
And awaits my spirit too.
For the cause that needs
assistance
For the wrong that needs
resistance,
For the future in the distance,
And the good that I may
do.
This permissive dispensation
of Divine providence breaks off a union of hearts that had its inception
and beginning almost three-quarters of a century ago in the old log school
house, when in their early teens, an attachment was formed and tokens of
love exchanged, which later on was cemented and firmly bound, when at the
matrimonial altar they took the pledge to "Cleave to each other so long
as they both should live," which has been faithfully and religiously kept
for almost sixty-two long years.

for a number of years. Later on he accepted a clerkship in the hardware
store of the late Aug Nell. Afterward he conducted a grocery store in Rushville
for some few years, since which time he has been principally engaged in
farming. -- In early life he made a profession of religion and accepted
Christ as his savior, and altho, like many others, there were times in
his life that he did not live up to and enjoy the full measure of the christian
life, yet at the close he felt no fears and died in the full assurance
of a blessed immortality. -- Mr. Kruse was a man of more than ordinary
intelligence, and very emphatic and decided in his convictions, ever ready

as error. -- Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock

the residence of the bride's father, 2 1/2 miles east of Rushville, by
Rev. John Knowles, Mr. James K. Matthews and Miss Dora Kruse, daughter
of F. H. D. Kruse. - It is just as natural for young folks to get married
as it is for water to run down hill. No matter how the times are, it don't
affect the matrimonial market, which may be quoted as improving in this
section of country. We extend our congratulations to the young couple,
wishing them the full enjoyment of a long and pleasant life, such as ever
comes to the faithful and true. The printer was duly remembered by the
fair bride, for which many thanks.
