11434 NANCY ALPHIN b.1795 Bourbon Co. KY, m.21 Jun 1816 Campbell Co. KY to Balaam Buzbee, b. 1790 SC. Parents unknown. The marriage is the first recorded record of Balaam. Nancy and family in 1830 census of Boone Co. KY.. A John Busby (sic) is there also, no connection found to this Balaam. A deed recorded to John in Boone Co. list him as "fromTipton Co. Tenn" Nancy and family also in 1830 census of Schuyler Co. IL, next to Nancy's brother Luke Allphin and his family, apparently coming together to IL.. Balaam entered land in Sec 26 of Camden twp 1833; was commissioned a Justice of the Peace of this twp 3 Sep 1835. He performed the marriage for one of his daughters. In 1838 he purchased land in the town of Rushville, Schuyler Co.IL.. Family still there in 1840, owning and operating a water saw-mill. Feb 15 1847 Balaam purchased land in Clayton twp, Adams Co. IL; selling 14 Dec 1849; still there in 1850 (census record). Shortly afterwards the family moved west, settling ca 1855 in Jefferson Co. KS, near the now non-existent town of Ozawkie. Balaam died sometime between June and Aug of 1855 Jefferson Co. KS. His wife Nancy is administrator of his estate. Where Balaam was buried is unknown, though his estate did provide for a fence to be erected around his grave, which has yet to be found. Nancy m/2 6 Apr 1857 Jefferson Co. KS to Jacob R. Smith (her fathers will in Ky gives her name as Nancy Smith). Apparently Jacob died or they separated as Nancy is living 1860 Riley Co. KS with her two sons Benjamin and George. Nancy m/3 31 Oct 1860 Ogden twp of Riley Co. KS at home of George Buzbee to Bartholomew Corwin of Davis Co. KS, her son Charles was a witness. Apparently he died as a Nancy Corwin, single, is living with son George 1865 in Riley Co. ES. Nancy m/4 9 Jul 1866 Riley Co. KS to Martin Schriber. Nancy d.20 Nov 1875 Riley Co. KS and buried Ogden cemetery, Ogden, KS.. Her head stone gives her age as 98 and spells her last name Schiver , apparently both in error, as the cemetery was moved and new headstones were cut.

114344 BALAAM JACOB BUZBEE b.23 Feb 1820 KY?. Some question as to birth location. His Civil War record states he was born Morrow, Marion Co. IN 1822. It is possible he was born IN, unable to find his family in the 1820 census of KY, the family may of went to IN and returned to KY.. Balaam m.27 Jul 1848 Jacksonville, Morgan Co. IL to Catherine Bromley, b.8 Aug 1824 Monroe, County Bedford, Quebec, Canada, the dau of Samuel and Sarah Potter Bromley. Catherine's great grandfather 8ethuel Bromley marched on the first alarm at Lexington, enlisting 8 May 1775 in Col Parsons Regt.(see Bromley Genealogy by Viola Bromley). Balaam and family living 1850 in Scott Co.IL (here he says he was b. KY, while all other records say IN). Sometime after 1852 Balaam left his family and went to CA, via Panama to the gold fields in hopes of acquiring a fortune. After a two year absence he returned home with hardly any money at all. His return home was by a sailing ship around Cape Horn. Balaam and family left IL and moved to Jefferson Co. KS, arriving in Ozawkie 18 Aug 1856, after the death of his father in 1855. Salaam enlisted when the Civil War broke out, enlisting Sep of 1862 in the llth KS Cavalry. He served 3 yrs. He contracted a fatal disease while in the service and his wife received a pension for his service alter his death. He died 27 NOV 1872 OzawKie, KS. He was. buried first at Olive Branch cemetery, Jefferson Co. KS, later the cemetery was moved to Rose Hill cemetery, north east of Perry, Jefferson Co. KS.. The cemetery was moved due to the building of a damn which inundated the cemetery and most of the town of Ozwakie and much of the history and homesteads of the early settlers of that town and area. Catherine Buzbee after the death of Balaam moved to Lyndon, KS to five with her youngest dau Lillian Overfeldt. She died there 22 May 1907 and is buried next to her husband at Rose Hill cemetery. A large stone marks both their final resting place.
