Elizabeth Schwab, second daughter of Daniel and Catherine Schwab, was born near Harrisburg, PA,
April 29, 1829. Moved with her parents to Wood County, Ohio, when a mere child; later located near Canton, Ohio.
Was married to Joseph Clemens, December 25, 1850, in Carroll County, Ohio, where they resided for seventeen years. They then
moved to Rushville, where she has since resided.
To this union were born eight children, one dying in infancy; two in early childhood and John, who was the whole support of his
father, mother and sisters, met with a fatal accident on April 24, 1884, at the age of twenty-five years.
On May 4th, 1885, the husband was called home leaving the mother and four children, namely:
W. D. Clemens of Pleasantview, Mrs. Electra Baxter of Rushville, Mrs. Nora Deane of Roseville,
and Mrs. Bertha Parks of Rushville; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends to mourn
her loss.
Mother Clemens was of a very hospitable nature, and her home was always the home of preachers of the gospel. She made her
home with her eldest daughter, Mrs. Horace baxter, for a number of years, who carefully cared for her.
She united with The M. E. Church at the age of fifteen and on the day of her departure it was pleasant to converse with her
on her religious experiences. She was a member of the Houston M. E. Church at the time of her death.
She departed this life on January 11, 1921, at the age of 91 years, 8 months, and 12 days, being the last of the brothers and
sisters-in-law of the two families.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Baxter, conducted by Rev. George McCumber: singing furnished by
Henrietta and Eliza Scripps, Miss Huldreth Dace and Mrs. Earl Tyree:
Pall bearers were J.J. Sargent, Sam
Phillips, Eddie Brown, Edward Rose, Albert Parks, and George Deane. Internment is Rushville Cemetery.
