Jonathan Tharpe, son of Jonathan Sr. and Anna Tharpe, was born in
Buenavista Township, Schuyler county, Jan. 26, 1848.
His boyhood and early manhood was spent in that vicinity until 1871,
when he went to Butler county, Kansas, returning to Schuyler in the
****year, devoting his time to agriculture.
On Feb 21, 1875, he was united in marriage to Sarah Leneke. To this
union were born seven children--Florence Retta and John Wesley dying in
infancy and another son Eli Franklin, died Aug 16, 1903.
He is survived by four children--Loren, George W., Mrs. Jason Reno and
Mrs. Timothy Donaldson, and five grandchildren, the wife having
preceded him in death Jan 4, 1913.
In 1889 he became a resident of Woodstock Township, where he resided
until his death. During these years he won a large circle of friends and
was always known as a good and steadfast neighbor, and his death
entails a great loss to the family and community in which he lived.
During the last few years of his life his health has been broken and
while in Peoria for treatment his death came suddenly on Feb 23, 1917,
being caused by apoplexy.
At the time of his death the deceased was 69 years and 27 days of age,
and the last member of nine children.
Funeral services were held at Bethel church, conducted by Rev. James
Hardin Smith. interment in Palm cemetery.
