Matilda Ann Reno was born
in Browning township April 12, 1844; was united in marriage to W. J. Bates, Nov. 14th, 1867; departed this life Jan. 23, 1911, aged 66
years, 7 months and 11 days.
She was converted under A. J. Hodges' preaching at the
age of thirteen years, united with the Baptist church at Ridgeville and has lived a true christian life every since.
She was a loving wife and mother; was always ready with
a helping hand for her children, and ready to help the poor and needy, and ever had a word of cheer and comfort for those in
distress.
She was a patient sufferer for five years and about 2
weeks before her death she said God with his own hand had wiped her tears away.
Three of her children have gone on before her, two in
infancy and Mrs. Laura Geiss. She leaves to mourn her death a husband and six children: W. E. Bates of Abingdon, Francis E. of South
Dakota, Chas. L. and J. R. Bates, Ida Hafner and Blanche Guiess of Browning, five brothers and one sister and fourteen grand children,
besides of host of friends and relatives.
The funeral was held at the late residence in Browning,
conducted by Rev. Amanda F. Batterton of Beardstown; interment in Ridgeville cemetery.
