Mrs. W. J. Bates of Browning Died Monday Night Following Long Illness. Mrs. Matilda Bates, wife of W. J. Bates of Browning, died at her home in that village Monday evening at 10 o'clock. She had been an invalid for the past five years and her death was not unexpected.

Mrs. Bates was born in Browning township, April 12th, 1844, and was a daughter of Jonathan and Eliza Reno, who were pioneer residents of that locality. Her entire life was spent in the vicinity of Browning, where she was known and loved for her many noble traits of character. She leaves to mourn her death a devoted husband and family of seven children.

On Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock funeral services were held at the home in Browning, conducted by Rev. Batterton; interment in Ridgeville cemetery. A more extended sketch of the life of the deceased will be published in next week's TIMES.

Matilda Ann Reno was born in Browning township April 12, 1844; was united in marriage to W. J. Bates, Nov. 14th, 1867; departed this life Jan. 23, 1911, aged 66 years, 7 months and 11 days.

She was converted under A. J. Hodges' preaching at the age of thirteen years, united with the Baptist church at Ridgeville and has lived a true christian life every since.

She was a loving wife and mother; was always ready with a helping hand for her children, and ready to help the poor and needy, and ever had a word of cheer and comfort for those in distress.

She was a patient sufferer for five years and about 2 weeks before her death she said God with his own hand had wiped her tears away.

Three of her children have gone on before her, two in infancy and Mrs. Laura Geiss. She leaves to mourn her death a husband and six children: W. E. Bates of Abingdon, Francis E. of South Dakota, Chas. L. and J. R. Bates, Ida Hafner and Blanche Guiess of Browning, five brothers and one sister and fourteen grand children, besides of host of friends and relatives.

The funeral was held at the late residence in Browning, conducted by Rev. Amanda F. Batterton of Beardstown; interment in Ridgeville cemetery.
