 This indenture made this 25 day of September 1861, between Joseph H. Smith and the trustees on the premise and do convey a certain tract of land in the said county of Schuyler and the State of Illinois, described as follows: Commencing at the West corner of the South-west quarter of the South-east quarter of Section eight [8] in Township one [1] north of the baseline Range one [1] West of the fourth [4] Principal Meridian, thence running East nine and one-half [1/2] rods thence South eight and one-half [1/2] acres more or less only for proper use and benefit of the Union Baptist Church through the trustees and their successors, the said lot to be used as a burying ground and a site for a meeting house which is to be open to all denominations of Christians when occupied by the Union Baptist.

Dated  October 9, 1862
 

This cemetery is also called HARDSCRABBLE. It is being read in rows as nearly as possible starting on the West Side of the cemetery and going north to south.
