The information I can provide about James C. How is less certain. There
were two James Hows who served from Schuyler Co., IL. The information
below is for the one I believe to be the correct one. However, all the
researchers are not in agreement about this. If there are How
researchers who know what happened to James, I'd like to hear from them. I
believe his parents were Westley W. and Alvira How.

Enlisted in Company H, 34th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 01 June 1865.
Mustered out Company H, 34th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 12 July 1865
in Louisville, KY

James How born in Franklin Co., IN, aged 20, farmer volunteered on 21
Dec 1863 mustered in at Mt. Sterling, IL on 31 Dec 1863.

Described as having blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5'8" tall.
Residence is listed as Camden, Schuyler Co., IL 9 Dist. Co. A IL Vols;
enlisted for 3 years

There is a pension application for this soldier listed on the index
with a widow of Sarah E.  Form is filled out for my next trip to the
Archives. (Jan 2005) Request returned marked "Missing - charged out 14 Jul
1975" (April 2005)

James C. How and Sarah Elizabeth Ridings were married 2 June 1859 in
Marion Co., MO. Sarah married Thomas G. Moore 24 Jan 1867 in Macoupin
Co., IL and William Thomas Pennell 24 Feb 1878 in Joplin Co., MO. Sarah
died 21 May 1899 in Clark Co., IL.

"Wash" referred to in the letter is another brother, Joel George
Washington Ridings, who also served in the Civil War.
