Museum Updates
GENEALOGICALLY SPEAKING
Nov. 07, 2007
By now everyone should know that as of Nov.
1st, The Schuyler Jail Museum returned to its winter
schedule. The museum section will be closed until April 1, 2008. I have some updates for The Heritage Room (Genealogy) for the months of November and December.
Weather permitting, the Heritage Room will be open every Sat. and Sun. from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. In December it will be open Dec. 1st and 2nd.; Dec. 8th and 9th.; Dec.
15th and 16th. The Heritage Room will then be closed until January 5th & 6th.
I hope that when the museum section opens next spring, everyone will
rush in to see how nice it looks. New, easily read, labels are on almost every item.
As everyone knows that has been to the museum, we are quite proud of
our military exhibit. Now we have a special, separate display for the lady Veterans. Tempered glass doors and shelving has just been installed in this case,
making it a very special part of our military presentation.
A plexiglass cover has been installed on the wall display of the S.
S. Rushville Victory Ship. Bob Clugston and Don Shuman donated their time and talents and constructed a small glass display case for the S. S. Rushville Victory
Ship christening champaign bottle. The museum has had this in its possession for years and no way to display it. Thank you Bob and Don.
Jackie Sargent donated two W. W. II Navy Reserve uniforms of John
Bernard Sargent. One is white and one is navy.
Jerri Lee Cain donated an old, old nine patch patterned quilt from
the Clark School. On it are names of students of the school.
Jon Young donated three Boy Scout Leadership Books, 1987 –
89.
Estel Prather donated an 8X10 picture of Cudahy Plant employees,
1942, with Boy Scouts and Mayor Carl Strong. She also gave a Social Security card and I.E. that Cudahy issued to Hazel M. Bowen Street and a family history book
on the Genealogy of Thomas & Mary Elmore Family. This book is in the Family History Library in the genealogy part of the museum.
We want to thank everyone who had donated even the smallest of items
to the museum. These items help preserve Schuyler’s past and make Schuyler’s history more actual today.
It isn’t too early to renew or to join the
Schuyler Jail Museum and Genealogical Center. The dues are $15.00 a year/January 1 – December 31. With a paid dues a patron receives the Center's
quarterly, The Schuylerite, an informative and historical
publication. You may send your dues to The Schuyler Jail Museum, 200 S. Congress St., Rushville, IL. 62681 or just drop it by the museum any Saturday or Sunday
afternoon.
The following are the “Top Ten” genealogy mistakes people make when tracing their family line.
-
Misspelling the word “genealogy”
-
Trusting everything you see in print
-
We’re related to – (someone famous) just because of a name
association.
-
Being satisfied with just names and dates
-
Not following generic family history
-
Accepting family legend without question
-
Limiting yourself to the current spelling of names
-
Neglecting to write down your sources (something you will regret later)
-
Assuming everything on the Internet is correct.
-
Putting off talking to older relatives.
I’m sure everyone who has researched their family lines is
guilty of at least one of these mistakes at one time or the other. Stop by the Heritage Room and let the volunteers help you with your family research. We have
many kinds of forms that will aid you in getting the correct information.
