Doddsville Situated in theextreme northern part of Littleton township, partly in Schuyler countyand partly in McDonough county, is the cosy village of Doddsville. It waslaid out by Samuel Dodds and Paris Wheeler, July 6, 1836, and platted andsurveyed by Allen Persinger, county surveyor. That portion lying in Schuylercounty is located on the N. W. 1/4 of section 5. Samuel Dodds built thefirst house and had the first store. The village formerly did considerablelocal trade. Browning The village of Browningis situated on the W. 1/2 of section 26. It was surveyed and platted byLeonidas Horney for R. Dilworth. The plat was recorded in the officeof the circuit clerk, May 11, 1848. Its position on the Illinoisriver made it at an early day an important shipping point. Vesselsfrom Pittsburg discharged their cargoes here and regular lines of packetsrun to it from St. Louis. Long lines of teams might be seen everyday awaiting their turn at the warehouse. Erwin Erwin is a small villagenear the banks of Crooked Creek, on the northwest quarter of the northwestquarter of section 26, and was laid out by Columbus C. Meeks, and the platand survey were made by County Surveyor, Leonidas Horney, on the 27th ofMarch 1860. Columbus C. Meeks built, of hewed log, the first house,in 1856, and kept the first store and first blacksmith shop, was the firstjustice of the peace and first postmaster, when a post-office was establishedin 1856.
