He died 23 Aug 1886 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL and was buried Aug 1886 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL, Rushville Cem. ^[1]Facts… Baker Family” “George Baker Sr. came to Rushville in 1832 George married (1) Lydia HILER on 11 Dec 1823. Lydia was born 30 May 1800. She died 19 Mar 1848. ^[2]Died from Tuberculosis.

1. Francis D. BAKER was born 8 Sep 1824.He died 2 Feb 1866 in Quincy, Adams, IL. ^[3]Died from heart failure. Francis married Ann E. SPERRY on 1844. They had:

   Almira Williams’ first husband was Robert Williams, prominent lawyer of Quincy, IL. They were married in 1835, and Mr. Williams died in 1841 leaving a son by a former marriage – namely R. A. Williams of Camden, IL. He married Mary E. Baker. 5. Lydia Agnes BAKER was born 7 Nov 1834. She died 3 Jan 1836. ^[5]Died about age 12; cause unknown.

7. Margaret Jane BAKER was born 16 Dec 1841 and died 13 Nov 1897.George also married (2) Almira Swan WILLIAMS on 19 Apr 1849 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL. Almira was born 22 Apr 1800. She died 21 Jun 1885.

William H. Baker

William H. BAKER (George) was born 27 Sep 1826. He died 4 Jul 1881.

Listed in Facts concerning Baker Family. William married Margaret Charlotte OWINGS, daughter of Thomas Cockey DEYE OWINGS, Dr. and Margaret WILLINGTON, on 27 May 1861 in Quincy, Adams, IL. Margaret was born 26 May 1835 in PA. She died 12 Oct 1926 in Alton, Madison, IL and was buried Oct 1926 in Alton, Madison, IL, Oakwoods Cem.
Entered 7/25/1992 from mother’s (Ruth Garvin Bishop) family group 30. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Alton, IL., or Quincy, IL. Family group chart references 1861-1865, Vol. I. of an unknown publication or record. She is also listed in Ruth (Garvin) Bishop’s copy of “Facts concerning the Baker family…” where either Ruth Bishop wrote, “Aunt Maggie to grandma Brockway, sister to Grandmother Jenkins (Ruth Bishop’s grandmother Jenkins was William B. Jenkin’s wife, Matilda OWINGS, sister to Margaret C. OWINGS).

Edna LaRue (Brockway) Garvin, maternal grandmother of James B. Bishop, Jr., wrote in “Facts concerning the Baker family of the Eastern Shore of Maryland,” “Grandpa Jenkins spent some time with us about 1899 & 1900. I knew all of his children – my aunts & uncles – except W.H., mother’s ‘bro. Will.’  About 1902 or 1903 she and Aunt Maggie Jenkins had not heard from him for a long time – wrote to Postmaster at Joplin, Mo. from where they had last heard – no information. About 1958 I had a letter from my brother, enclosing a card from someone in Kansas City, Mo. asking if he were a son of the Brockway who married Kathryn Jenkins. He sent it to me asking me to answer, which I did, and received a letter very shortly. The writer was a daughter-in-law of my uncle Will Jenkins, mother’s lost brother, who had lived for years in Mo. & Kans. and died April 1, 1951 – just 5 mo. & a few days before mother.”

Smith- Manlove Bible Records
SMITH-MANLOVE Bible Records – These records were in the Bible belonging to the family of John and Susan (Cecil) Manlove, early settlers near Andover, Kansas. They came to Kansas from Schuyler Co., Ill. The Smith line was the maternal line of John Manlove who was born in North Carolina, and who on his way from there to Illinois met Susan Cecil in Kentucky and brought her to Illinois and on to Kansas. Other families from Hancock, McDonough and Schuyler Counties in Illinois came to Andover and settled there in the 1870’s. Relatives remained and to this day are found in the Illinois area as well as the Andover-Wichita area.

Excerpts from The Schuyler Citizen, September 5, 1872: Personal – Miss Ella Jenkins and her two cousins, the Misses LaRue and Josie Grantham, who have been spending vacation in Rushville, left last week for Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Miss Jenkins proposes to continue in the Iowa Wesleyan University till she graduates.

Stella married Norris MAXON on 13 Aug 1874. Norris was born 1 Apr 1849.

 

George W. Baker

George W. BAKER (George) was born 13 May 1837. He died 11 Aug 1888. Died due to kidney trouble.

THE TORNADO
Our county was visited by a terrific wind storm on Thursday evening last,but little less destructive in its effects than the ever memorable oneof 1856, which destroyed the village of Littleton. It came with a deep, hoarse, terrifying roar from the south-west at about 9 p.m., passing across Mr. Parrott’s premises, levelling fences and trees and moving his kitchen partly from its foundations. Its most destructive power was exerted on the Lock farm, just beyond, where hundreds of large strong trees, some of them two and three feet over, were hurled to the ground, torn up by the roots or twisted off, some instances half way up the trunks. Beyond Mrs. Lock’s it passed over the north side of Geo. Baker’s farm, leveling a mile or more of fence he had just finished resetting. A small out housebelonging to Mr. Bigelow, at the railroad crossing north of town, was carried some distance and dashed to pieces.

It having missed Rushville less than half a mile, we have good reason to rejoice at a narrow escape from what would have been a serious calamity had it struck us. It is fortunate so few houses were in its path. A number of orchards were badly damaged. The same storm passed Quincy about 8 p.m. same evening. About twenty miles this side passengers had to help remove trees and other obstructions thrown on the track.

George married Mary L ROSE on 4 May 1860 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL. Mary was born 2 Apr 1841. She died Oct 1916.

3. Robert George BAKER was born 8 Mar 1866. He died5 Jul 1887.
4. Myrtle BAKER was born 21 Jan. Myrtle married (1) John FOX on 1889. The marriage ended in divorce. Myrtle also married (2) Samuel DUNHAM.
5. Maggie May BAKER was born 8 Jun 1875.

 

Margaret Jane Baker

Margaret Jane BAKER (George) was born 16 Dec 1841. She died 13 Nov 1897.

Margaret married William MCCREERY on 10 Feb 1859 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL. William was born 29 Jul 1837. He died 19 Sep 1867.

They had the following children:

1. George Clifford MCCREERY was born 8 Dec1862. George married Hattie GALBRAITH on 20 Jan 1900 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL. Hattie was born 21 May 1868 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL.
2. Mary Maria “Mollie” MCCREERY was born 6 Mar1866. She died 22 Feb 1928. Mary married (1) Warren R. LEACH on 4 Oct 1887. The marriage ended in divorce. Warren was born 4 Jan 1861. Mary also married (2) James A. WHITE on 22 Sep 1869 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL. James was born 30 Jan 1836. He died 22 Feb 1912 in Quincy, Adams, IL and was buried 1912 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL.

 

Franklin S. Baker

Franklin S. BAKER (George) was born 13 Apr 1851 in Rushville, Schuyler, IL. He died 18 Aug 1930 in Salinas, KS. Franklin married Mabel HARVEY on 28 May 1881. Mabel was born 11 Dec 1860 in CA.

They had the following children:

1. Frank Harvey BAKER was born 12 Apr 1882in CA. Frank Harvey married Ida May MCGUIRE on 16 Sep 1911 in CA. Ida was born 18 Jan 1886.
