Friesland, near Bremen, Germany, Dec. 6, 1821. In 1835 incompany with his father and brother, Sunke M. he came to America and landedin New York July 4th. From there Mr. Kruse, Sr. with his two sons wentto Albany, NY by way of the Hudson river, thence across to Schenectadyand by the Erie canal to Buffalo; thence by lake to Cleveland and fromthere by land and the Ohio river to Cincinnati. He afterwards went to Beardstownand a few months afterwards purchased a mill on Sugar Creek, 10 miles eastof Rushville. In Apr. 1856 Mr. Kruse and his sons located on the farm whichwas afterwards to be known as the Kruse homestead, where F. H. D. Krusewas to spend his life and end his closing days. This farm, which was thena tract of the virgin wilderness, has grown in worth with the lapseof years and today unincumbered, is worth close to $100 per acre. Likeall the other early settlers Mr. Kruse chose a timbered pierce of groundand after long years of hard labor the farm was cleared with the exceptionof a magnificent grove which is the admiration of everyone who travelsthe plank road to Pleasantview. Coming to this country at the age of 14and not able to speak a word of English, Mr. Kruse set diligently to workto master the rudiments of the language, and at the old Liberty school, near his farm, he became versed in the common English branches. He wasa great reader and took a live interest in the affairs of the state andnation, and as late as last Sunday perused his papers with keen pleasure.Since The Times has been under the present management, a period of 31 yrs.,Mr. Kruse has been a regular subscriber, besides sending the paper to hisson, Polk in Texas. — In 1843 Mr. Kruse purchased the home farm from hisfather and on Dec. 3rd of that year was united in marriage to ElizabethC. Garrett, who survives him at the age of 75 yr. The union of young heartswhich was sealed at the altar in that pioneer day have ever beat in unisonand through years of pleasure, sorrow and pain, they have lived to seethe glory of their lives fulfilled. And now, after a union of 55 years, the aged consort has been called to his eternal home and the bond of loveand devotion broken. — To Mr. and Mrs. Kruse were born six children, oneof whom died in infancy. The surviving members of the family are HenryK. of Woodstock Twp., George W. Kruse of this city; Polk Kruse of Millsop,Texas; Mrs. M. W. Greer of Rushville Twp. and Mrs. James E. Mathews ofLaBelle, Mo. With the exception of Polk all the children were home at thetime of their father’s death. AlpheusBrown, who had known Mr. Kruse for 53 years. Forty-seven years ago Mr.Kruse became a member of the church of Christ and has ever lived a trueand faithful Christian life and his last days of peace with the assuranceof eternal reward.

OBITUARY: The Rushville Times,June 24, 1936; NOTE: Polk Kruse, son of the late F. H. D. and ElizabethKruse, who resided three miles east of Rushville until their death some30 or 40 years ago, died at his home in Millsap, Texas on Friday, 12 June;aged 91 years. A letter was received from his widow giving the news ofhis death and requesting us to discontinue the Times, which had gone tohim regular for about 70 years. She stated that he enjoyed readingthe home paper up to the time of his fatal illness. Mr Kruse left SchuylerCounty soon after the Civil War, probably about 1866 and located in Texas. His father sent the Times to him after he located and continued to do soas long as he lived and since that time Polk had the paper continued. Duringthe years he lived in Texas, Mr. Kruse made only one visit back to hisboyhood home – but he kept in touch with three generations of his familyand other names he knew through the Times. After locating in Millsap,Mr. Kruse was married but his widow confined her letter to a bare announcementof his death. Older residents of Whiteoak neighborhood and relatives willrecall Mr. Kruse as the last member of his family, even though they nevermet him. In years past he often had letters put in the Times and was representeda few years ago in our First Homecoming Addition.

Greer, were held at the Christianchurch in Rushville Thursday afternoon of last week at 2 o’clock. Rev.Fred Wilson, former pastor and old-time friend of the decendent, conductedthe service, assisted by Rev. H. W. Talley. Interment was in Rushvillecemetery. — The following tribute, written by the husband with whom shehad lived more than sixty-two beautiful years, was read at the serviceby Rev. Wilson in connection with a very appropriate poem, “Lovers Still.”– Susan H., eldest daughter of F. H. D. and Elizabeth Kruse, was bornon the old homestead farm two and one-half miles east of Rushville, Jan.20, 1847, and passed out of this earthly life at her home in sight of theplace of her birth Nov. 13, 1928; aged 81 years, 8 months and 23 days.– She was joined in marriage to Martin W. Hermetet of Macomb, Ill.; Henry E., San Rafael, Calif.,and Owen J., living at home, two sons dying in infancy. There is also leftto mourn her death her aged husband, two brothers, Polk and Henry Kruse, both living in Texas, and one sister, Dora K. Mathews, living in Rogers,Arkansas, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. — In earlylife she made a profession of her faith in Christ and united with the Christianchurch of Rushville. Later she transferred her membership to the Churchof Christ, living a faithful Christian life until the Master said, “Itis enough, come up higher.” She was a great admirer of the beautiful, bothin life and in nature. She loved her flowers, she loved her home and herfamily, she loved her neighbors and friends, she loved her church and theworship and services of the sanctuary. Her life was dedicated to the serviceof others and her greatest happiness consisted in making others happy. The following lines, taken from one of her favorite poems fits her caseto perfection:
I live for those who loveme
For those who know me true,
For the heaven that shinesabove me
And awaits my spirit too.
For the cause that needsassistance
For the wrong that needsresistance,
For the future in the distance,
And the good that I maydo.
This permissive dispensationof Divine providence breaks off a union of hearts that had its inceptionand beginning almost three-quarters of a century ago in the old log schoolhouse, when in their early teens, an attachment was formed and tokens oflove exchanged, which later on was cemented and firmly bound, when at thematrimonial altar they took the pledge to “Cleave to each other so longas they both should live,” which has been faithfully and religiously keptfor almost sixty-two long years.
