Buriedin the El Paso Cemetery, Derby, Sedgwick County, Kansas is Civil War veteranAnsel W. Sloat who was born September 16, 1834 and died September 18, 1913.The Civil War headstone shows he served with Co. G, 28th Illinois Infantry.Buried next to Ansel is wife Martha T. Julian (Sloat) who was born on February19, 1842 and died August 31, 1902. They were married in Schuyler Co, Illinoison October 5, 1861. Also buried next to Ansel and Martha are Lewis Sloatwho died February 3, 1954 and Ermine Sloat who died July 24, 1952. Theyhad one other child Edward who was born March 1870 in Illinois.
Anselwas mustered into Co. G, 28th Illinois Infantry on August 19, 1861 andwas discharged February 29, 1862 due to disability. At the time of hisenlistment, he gave residence of Rushville, IL. Ansel at one time livedin the area of Rose Hill, Butler County, KS as he was listed on the CivilWar disabled veterans living in Butler County with a post office of RoseHill, KS.
28thIllinois Infantry
TheTwenty-eighth Infantry was composed of three companies from Pike county,one from Fulton, one from Schuyler, one from McDonough, one from Mason,one from Scott, and two from Menard. It was organized at Camp Butler, August15, 1861, by the appointment of Louis H. Walters as Lieutenant Colonel,and Charles J. Sellon as Major, and was mustered into the service for threeyears by Captain Pitcher, U. S. A.
