Heapparently tried to start a pottery somewhere between New Orleans and Illinois.
Walterand Margaret are listed in the 1850 census of Bainbridge township, in thearea of Pleasantview. Walter is listed as a potter.
JosephGragg’s account of his trip to Oregon states that Walter died on the trailin Little Sandy, Wyoming.
CynthiaCroxton Parkinson states that her father, Thomas Elijah Croxton said thatthe name was spelled Crockstown and later shortened. He believedthe town might have been called that.

DARMagazine, May, 1976:
Historians place the arrival of Thomas and his family in the Grants Pass area in 1858. His sons attended school at Vannoy Ferry. In 1859 Thomas acquiredtwo land claims, one of which had been granted to Orson Gilbert in 1854,and the other he purchased from Joshua Schols. Between the claims,Thomas owned what is now northwest Grants Pass. (In 1859 all hisland was in Jackson County.)
Thomaswas a farmer-rancher-miner. He purchased an interest in the Dry Diggins,a gold mining operation located about three miles east of present day GrantsPass. He worked there during the winter months. He was alsoa circuit-riding Methodist preacher, traveling throughout southern Oregonand northern California.
In1864, when a road was being built over Merlin Hill, the Croxton Stage Stationwas established about a half mile from what is now the Industrial Parknot far from the the junction of Highland and Vine Street. As owner-operatorof the stage station, Thomas applied for a post office under the name of”Grant”. The application was denied because there was already a postoffice in Oregon by that name. He resubmitted his application, onlythis time he requested the name “Grants Pass.” It was approved, andThomas became the first postmaster in 1865.
Thomasdied in 1868 while preaching a sermon in Gold Beach.

Sometimesreferred to as Pioneer Cemetery or the Old City Cemetery, the Croxton Cemeteryis a two acre parcel located between Ninth and Tenth Streets, south ofSavage Street at about Pioneer Way. The land was donated in about1864 or 1865, to the public as a cemetery by Thomas Croxton. It wasthe first formal burying ground in the area that later became JosephineCounty.
